Thanks for this post Jenny! I was surfing Twitter last night when you posted a link and as soon as I started reading I decided I need to find a place for this in my unit.

My students are pre-service teachers and they are about to start their first English methods curriculum/class. I have incorporated the use of Twitter into our class activities, and rewarded its use through an assignment option (not mandatory). So we should have lots of Tweets created by our class, and surely a story to tell in there somewhere!

Currently my best idea is to use Storify to 'tell the story' of the Poetry Forum we are holding at the end of the unit in June. With luck that event will have related Tweets AND YouTube clips to use. I will have to ask the students what they think - I'll be sure to post about how I go :)

As always, danah has much to offer. Easier for heritage medias to sustain Miller's Salem Effect from a point of ignorance. I tend to think as a new superficiality becomes the default (a lack of critical engagement/thinking/questioning) this will be a far more serious digital divide to contend with. Broadcasters were once finite and have successfully "sold" furphies, often to highly educated but ultimately still gullible audiences. (Ern Malley to War of the Worlds) Now, ubiquitous broadcasting in open spaces, with networked dialogues calls for highly developed, as Howard Rheingold dubs them, crap detection skills. Parents, educators and anyone else who wants to genuinely understand the new playing field must swim in the same ocean. Thanks for the notes Jenny, much appreciated.

Hey im Joy Eady im in EDM310 with Dr. Strange and I commented on one of your other post and will be commenting on this one and posting information about both on my blog by Feb. 12th.
I really agree on the whole coding messages on facebook as well as anything else that the parents could get into. Not as an adult, but as a child i could relate to using code words and sayings so that my mom or any other adult may not catch on to what me and my friends were talking about. Also yes with the whole bedroom situation, that was like my safe haven, a place that i called mine and somewhere i could express my thoughts and beliefs and really show my individuality. Now as an adult and on my own with a kid i still use my bedroom as a place for me time . Also a good point on the whole sexual predators on the internet. I think that in the past is was more of an issue and concern, but not so much now. Privacy settings and other things have really helped out with that case. Now there are still problems i think with bullying and stalking over things like facebook.I see a great deal of bashing and putting other people down on facebook. So i think that is a issue that still needs work.
I really enjoyed reading your comments they were very useful and helpful They really grasped my attention . Thanks:)

From what I've seen and heard, the excessive fear of sexual predators hanging out on the internet and luring children into horrible situations or using information left on facebook posts to stalk them is largely a thing of the past, at least where I live and work. It hasn't been a major focus of the internet safety discussions I've had with the HS students I work with in several years, nor is it at the school my children attend. Parents and educators have correctly recognized that threats to children's safety & well being (both on & off the internet) are far more likely to be people they know.

Hello I am Joy Eady . I am in EDM310 and will be commenting on two of your blog post and i will be sumbitting a summary to your blogs and my comments on my blog page.
I agree with you as well. I think that many students do not fully take the time to really connect and understand the true meaning of something they have viewed or read. I do believe it is mostly because us students do not obtain enough context of the information to fully grasp and really make a connection with the things we encounter day to day. I believe that those tools would probably come in handy in helping the students learn more and become more understanding about the information they read.

Hi Jenny,

After reading your "overwhelmed" tweet today I was worried! I start the meetings on Wednesday. I had last week away from the library, but feel like I haven't really left the building.

I'm like you...it's the kids that lift my spirits and when they arrive my heart sings because I know they are the reason I come in every day and love doing what I do...
