School’s out Friday

I haven’t featured a flash mob in quite awhile for a School’s out Friday post, so time for some unbridled joy that comes from indulging in your groove thing. Well, the next best thing really – watching people indulging in their groove thing!

Having spent time at the Piazza San Marco in recent months, I’m not sure how this flash mob managed to clear the space necessary to get their performance happening. How they assembled a mass of people for this in a place like Venice and where they might have practised beforehand, well, that’s mind boggling too. According to Venezia Today (once Google Translate helped me decipher language!), it was a fiftieth birthday gift from a special lady to her partner. Interesting gift, and quite possibly, a pricey one too!

If I had any energy, I’d be up for getting my groove thing happening, but alas, end of year exhaustion has well and truly set in. Time to head to bed to reclaim energy levels. Enjoy your weekend – get your groove thing happening if an opportunity presents itself. 🙂

School’s out Friday

Have you been wondering if School’s out Friday or maybe even this blog had bitten the dust? I wouldn’t be surprised if you had, given my lack of activity of late. It’s my hope that I can get some consistant posting happening in the coming weeks, as school commitments slow down and I grab some time to consolidate some thinking and get ideas penned here.

I’m a fan of the festive season. I love a good round of carols and an impressive light show. I’m on the lookout for a halfway decent Carols by Candlelight in my locale and if there’s a well lit house display up for viewing after the event, I’ll be there. Hence tonight’s offerings. Start with the flash mob singing a round of carols in an American shopping centre, then finish with a clever light show from Perth featuring christmas lights synchronised to Psy’s Gangman Style.

All of this reminds me that I must attend to some Christmas shopping this weekend. And I must commit some time to finding the delicate necklace I brought for my daughter earlier in the year, but cleverly hid from her view. If only I remembered where that hiding spot was…  wish me luck in my search!

School’s out Friday

Thanks this week go to Kathy Schrock, who tweeted about this Christmas Flash Mob at The Carlson School of Management. The saxophonist was joined by 300 of his friends from the University of Minnesota’s School of Music this November, and they are here tonight for your enjoyment. Do watch and enjoy.

I recently got an iphone 4S, and have really enjoyed getting to use Siri, the inbuilt office assistant that you talk to and it retrieves the information you have requested. I’ve done the obvious things like asking what the weather will be like, but have also asked it to phone my husband and send a text message. It performs really well, and I can already envision how I will be using it in my workplace next year. I’m not great at using the calendar on my computer for appointments. I know, I can already hear you gasping as you contemplate how a tech savvy person like me still relies more heavily on hand written diary entries for remembering appointments! I’m finding my system is flawed now as I take my computer or iPad with me everywhere (and the phone too!) and don’t always have the diary. I figure if I ask Siri to send me reminders, and use the calendar on my computer more effectively, then I’m not going to strike any embarrassing moments like double booking appointments. The following Apple ad featuring a jolly fat man has me convinced I can be organising my time more effectively!

Merry Christmas to you all, dear readers. Happy holidays to those of you who don’t celebrate Christmas. I hope you get the opportunity to share moments of fun, frivolity and merriment. Hopefully you’ll get a little quiet time for yourself in there too along the way.

School’s out Friday

By now, you’d all be aware that I love a good flash mob. I love the shared commitment, the synchronised dancing, the sheer enjoyment of watching people loving life. But this week’s flash mob really takes the cake. This is the Sock Summit 2011 Flash Mob. Here we see hundreds of knitters coming together to dance for the love of yarn. I never knew people could have such a passionate relationship with a ball of wool. Obviously, I’ve been missing something all these long, lonely, yarn free years. Maybe I need to re-evaluate my life? These people look really happy. One YouTuber has left a comment with this video, saying,

That’s it, it’s official: I’m taking a skein of yarn to Prom this year and slow-dancing with it.

This could be the start of something!!

No other postings this week is testament to a full on week where I’m feeling overwhelmed with what needs to be done. I don’t know about you, but I seem to be chasing my tail all the time of late and just never seem to be able to find the time to dedicate to a good blog post or two. Hopefully, I’ll get another post happening before the weekend’s end, but if not, so be it. Maybe I’ll take up knitting instead, and find happiness and fulfillment with a ball of wool!

School’s out Friday

I wish I was at Columbia University Library when this flash mob descended on a normally serenely quiet library environment. Great fun!! If I ever get to have the 40th birthday I wish I’d had, then I’ll be cranking out the Jenny Luca version over the sound system!

School’s out Friday

Nothing like a good flash mob to lift your spirits, get you moving and bring a smile to your dial. This flash mob came together in Rome and were promoting a new season of the US show ‘Glee‘.

I’m feeling a sense of glee tonight. I suspect there are plenty of Victorian educators feeling the same way.  It’s end of term time here in Victoria, and it’s been a long, cold, packed to the rafters term three. I’m so looking forward to some downtime and a few sleep ins. Maybe I can get rid of those black rings under my eyes over the next fortnight!

School’s out Friday

I think we need a good Flash Mob to end our week on a high. Beach goers at Bondi Beach in November 2009 were treated to this dance extravaganza while sunning themselves on what looks like a perfect Spring day.It was organised by DJ Dan Murphy and stars one of Australia’s most famous drag queens – Joyce Maynge. I love it, just like I love all flash mob events where people let their guard down and have fun entertaining the unsuspecting public.

School holidays are finally here for those of us teaching in Australia. Two weeks of Autumnal bliss. I just hope the perfect weather we’ve been having will hold out and we can enjoy the sun (and the odd Coffee shop or two). The ACEC Conference is fast approaching so I’ll be a tad busy putting together three presentations I am delivering there.

In case you missed it, it was Michael Jackson’s birthday on the 29th of August, and the flash mobs were out to celebrate the occasion. This mob was in Seattle at Pioneer Square and the Pike Place Market. Same routine at different times of the day. If you haven’t noticed, I just love a good flash mob occasion. Must get involved in one myself one day!

Flash mob tribute to Michael Jackson in Sergels Torg, Stockholm.

Same song, same flash mob, this time at Central station, Stockholm. 

Flash mob in London : tribute to Michael Jackson on June 26th, the day of his death.

Wikipedia explains a Flash mob as being;

A flash mob (or flashmob[1]) is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief time, then quickly disperse. The term flash mob is generally applied only to gatherings organized via social media or viral emails. The term is generally not applied to events organized by public relations firms or as publicity stunts.

Michael Jackson’s recent passing has seen a spate of Flash mobs coming together to pay tribute to a singer who had an enormous influence on people the world over. You can find evidence of this by searching on YouTube for ‘Flash mobs Michael Jackson’. It appears there are more to come. On August 9th in London a mass ‘Thriller’ dance is planned as a ‘Goodbye Party’. I’ll have to keep my eyes open for the YouTube footage of that one.

It’s interesting how technology has enabled people from various backgrounds to congregate for action, be it a tribute to Michael Jackson or protests in the streets of Iran. In the videos above, what is most noticeable are the mobile phones raised high in salute, capturing the evidence so that it can be passed on and shared.
